2.11h: Vitamin C - Update 03 Dec. 2021

Vitamin C, aka "Ascorbic Acid " or "Ascorbate"; its main food source is fresh fruit, especially citrus. Ascorbate is the best anti-oxidant supplement to protect our bodies against the electron-excess free radicals produced by UV light from the sun and tanning, from radioactive substances, from x rays, from toxic drugs that get into our bodies, and from the toxic products of our own body's metabolism. The free radicals do their damage by reacting with DNA to cause cancer and worsen aging; in the eye, the free radicals cause and worsen eye cataracts and retinal degeneration. In detoxifying the free radicals by picking up their active electrons, the vitamin C ascorbate gets chemically reduced to dehydroascorbate. Our body tissues have a natural enzyme system that then restores the dehydroascorbate to its original vitamin C form. Thus vitamin C is a recycling anti-oxidant. Vitamin C is the best because, in addition to being anti-oxidant, it regenerates and can be re-used. Also best because it gives least bad side effect, is inexpensive, and it has a spin-off good effect of increasing the absorption of iron from food in the stomach which helps prevent iron deficiency anemia. And it protects against sprue, the dietary deficiency responsible for Brit sailors being called "Limeys".
How much vitamin C to take a day? I take up to 1 gram with each meal and have not experienced any bad effect from that.
Ascorbic acid helps make the body fluids more acid, which may be sometimes needed in treatment of urinary infections.
Vitamin C may help prevent brain aging and reduce risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Test of Vitamin C level is morning fasting blood for ascorbate.
US Food and Nutrition Board Recommended daily allowance is got by eating 2 to 3 oranges a day.

My observation taking powdered vitamin C is that the sweet-sour powder is good flavoring and in mouth for swallowing other medications - pills or capsules - without liquid.
A side bonus from high-dose, daily vitamin C is it may relieve night-time cramping in the calves of legs that can be agonizing in bed.

Most liposomal glutathione products fall within this range, with most brands suggesting a 500mg serving per day. So, if you want to have healthy antioxidant levels in your body, then 500mg (equivalent to 5 ml) of liposomal GSH will suffice.
